Xiaomi’s MIUI has a lot of lovers and haters as well and by showing ads in its native apps, it has given them another reason to hate MIUI. The ads in MIUI have been more frequent in recent months and come all over the phone from the security app, music player themes app and now even in settings app in the Xiaomi smartphones. A lot of users are posting about it on Reddit and Twitter. Banner ads were okay and now they have started showing full-screen ads and even push notifications.
The company admits to showing ads in a recent statement to The Verge: Advertising has been and will continue to be an integral part of Xiaomi’s Internet services, a key component of the company’s business model. At the same time, we will uphold user experience by offering options to turn off the ads and by constantly improving our approach towards advertising, including adjusting where and when ads appear. Our philosophy is that ads should be unobtrusive, and users always have the option of receiving fewer recommendations.
There are options everywhere to disable ads from the apps but it has become obsolete since it still shows ads and the process is too deep and complex for a normal user. The company has clarified that the ads are not a part of Android One phones like Mi A1 and Mi A2 but can be shown in its MIUI phones as it is in their policy.
Xiaomi is not the only company to show ads on its devices. Amazon sells phones at low costs with an option to pay more to get rid of ads, and Samsung sends ads through push notifications to its users. While there should be an official agreement before buying a phone that should clarify users that ads will be shown in this device in order to keep the pricing low. But what happens with those users who buy a premium flagship from Xiaomi and paid the expensive price of the phone and sees the ads? This is unfair from the Xiaomi’s part.
