At the recently concluded Mobile World Congress, Sony unveiled its XZ2 flagship smartphone with a number of interesting features, most notable among them is the improved 960 fps super slow-motion at Full HD (1080p) resolution. In comparison, Samsung’s latest Galaxy S9 smartphones are capable of delivering slow-motion at similar FPS at 720p resolution only.
Now though, it seems Sony is leaving no stone unturned in assuring its customers and competitors alike on how serious they are about the high-end phone segment. The Japanese company has just unveiled a higher-spec variant of XZ2, called XZ2 Premium. Essentially, the Premium variant has better screen, better camera, better battery and some more RAM.
SCREEN
The XZ2 Premium gets the 4K display compared to XZ2’s Full HD+ (1080p x 2160p) display. Expectedly, the screen is HDR compliant which shall make watching HDR content a joy. Also, the display of XZ2 Premium measures 5.8 inches compared to 5.7 inches in XZ2.
CAMERA
Apparently, the upgrades in the camera are much more talked about than the 4K display. While the XZ2 has a single-lens 19 MP camera at the back, the Premium gets a dual camera setup with the primary lens being the same 19 MP accompanied by a monochrome (black and white) 12 MP secondary lens. At the front also, the Premium gets a 13 MP shooter compared to XZ2’s 5 MP unit.
However, a dual camera is nothing new today. The most important feature of XZ2 Premium’s dual camera is that its ISO can go up to 51,200 for still images (for recording videos, ISO can go up to 12,800). That is huge by any imagination. But in a smartphone, increasing the ISO is not a good idea as that resultantly increases the risk of the grain effect. To handle this, Sony has claimed its AUBE fusion image signal processor can optimize the light and control noise in a certain way to derive impressive low-light images. We will have to wait and see.
MORE RAM
The XZ2 Premium gets 6 GB of RAM compared to 4 GB of RAM in the XZ2. The Snapdragon 845 processor remains unchanged in both.
BATTERY
Quite appropriate, the XZ2 Premium gets a larger battery of 3,540 mAh compared to XZ2’s 3,180 mAh unit. Given the much higher resolution screen of 4K, the battery life might not turn out to be different between the two siblings, but it is a rightful upgrade nonetheless.
