Samsung is working hard on the development of its flexible or bendable or foldable smartphones, whatever you’d like to call them, that it is planning to launch sometime in 2019. And the company is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the experience is worthwhile from all aspects.
On that note, Samsung has revealed that it has successfully developed a new OLED flexible display and it is said to be “unbreakable”. Now that is a very big claim indeed. I mean, unbreakable glass?! That is serious stuff.
However, Samsung has some solid points to hold that claim. The company got this glass tested by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), which works for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of US Department of Labor. This entity tested the newly developed glass in a series of drop tests, ranging 1.2 meters up to as high as 1.8 meters.
The glass is said to have dropped 26 times from a height of 1.2 meters. Along with this, it was tested for durability and functionality between the temperature range of 71 degrees and -32 degrees. The glass has been found to work flawlessly after all these tests with no physical damage at all. This, 1.2 meters height, is one of the military standards for testing such objects and even after dropping the glass from a height of 1.8 meters, it continued to work without any issues. Again, there was no damage noted.
Hojung Kim, General Manager at Samsung Display, commented, “the fortified plastic window is especially suitable for smartphones because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass.”
