Samsung to Take On Snapdragon 660 with its First Mid-Range Exynos Series 9 Processor

Samsung is preparing itself to take on Snapdragon 660 with its first ever mid-range Series 9 processor. Labeled as Exynos 9610, it will be Samsung’s first real Series 9 processor. If we recall, previously the Exynos 8895 was launched as a high-end Series 9 processor by the South Korean company when it ideally should have been a Series 8 processor.

Another unconfirmed news on these lines is that Samsung is working on Exynos 7872 as well which it will put against the Snapdragon 650.

Exynos 9610 to be Samsung’s first real Series 9 processor in the mid-range segment.


Based on 14 Nanometer Architecture
The 9610 is reportedly being developed on the 14NM architecture which is suitable for a mid-range processor. On a side note, the Exynos 8890 present in Galaxy S7 is based on the same architecture.

It will have eight cores in total where each set of 4 cores will be dedicated to ARM Cortex-A73 and Cortex-A53. The processor will work together with the new ARM Mali-G72 GPU with three cores and is said to be 25 percent more energy efficient than the earlier G71. Support for VR will be there.

As far as the connectivity goes, the processor will support Cat. 13 LTE modem with 600/150mbps speeds. Clearly, Samsung is leaving nothing behind in order to be a top competitor in the mid-range processor segment. The Exynos 9610 is speculated to debut in the fourth quarter of 2017 with supporting devices to follow.

Exynos 7872
This one will be a six-core processor, something not really common in this series. And similar to the Exynos 9610, the 7872 will be developed on the 14NM architecture with two cores for Cortex-A72 and the remaining four cores for Cortex-A53. It will be paired with Mali-G71 GPU with single-score and capable for Cat. 7 LTE modem with up to 300/100mbps speeds.
