Indian market is vast in terms of the purchasing capability of the public and hence, offers great opportunities for phone manufacturers to bring in a variety of phones, from ultra-affordable feature phones to the absolute high-end, expensive, smartphones.
Just a little over a month ago, we reported that Reliance Industries has announced its next generation JioPhone, called JioPhone 2. The original JioPhone has been very well received by the Indian public given its affordability as a feature phone as well as supportive features like the WiFi connectivity. Now, the JioPhone 2 is here to further increase the foothold of Reliance in the mobile phone market.
Finally, Reliance will begin the pre-orders for JioPhone 2 from August 15, which is tomorrow. However, the actual date of delivery is still to be declared. Interested people will be able to book the phone from Jio’s official website as well as from the MyJio app. And possibly the best part of the news is, the booking amount is Rs 2,999 which is the whole price of the phone. Reliance says it is the introductory price, so there’s a chance that it might increase a bit in the future.
Anyways, the JioPhone 2 seems like a fantastic feature phone for people who do not intend to own a smartphone. In fact, the JioPhone 2 can also be a very good secondary phone. Popular apps like Facebook, YouTube and Whatsapp will be preinstalled. It comes with a QWERTY keyboard, like the Blackberry’s of old, a dual-core processor along with 512 MB of RAM (enough for a feature phone) and 4 GB of internal storage. The storage is expandable up to 128 GB.
There’s a 2 MP main camera and a VGA (0.3 MP) front camera. The display itself is QVGA and the operating system is KaiOS (based on Firefox OS). The battery is a decent 2,000 mAh unit and there’s Bluetooth, NFC support, VoLTE, VoLTE-WiFi, 150 mbps LTE and GPS among other features.
