Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 6. This smartphone is the successor of Redmi 5 which was launched last year. The availability of this smartphone is currently limited to China but it is going to hit Indian shelves pretty soon. What’s interesting about this device is that it might cost around ₹8,000.

The company has equipped artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to its dual camera setup for better photography. Some other highlights of this smartphone include face unlock and fingerprint sensor. In contrast, for instance, the RealMe 1 doesn’t have fingerprint sensor but it costs ₹8,990. Anyway, the Redmi 6 is going to be a perfect rival of RealMe 1 and we will put these two phones against each other in near future.

Redmi 6 Design and Build Quality

In terms of design, it is just a bit different than its predecessor. The dual camera is stacked up horizontally while the fingerprint sensor remains at the same place. Power button and volume rockers are also placed at the same place. Coming to the front, the handset has glass panel and looks very similar to the Redmi S2.

As the handset has a smaller display compared to the predecessor, it is compact and easy to use for those having small palms. Personally, I also prefer compact phones. It weighs just 146 grams so it doesn’t feel heavy in hands.

Redmi 6 Display and Software

The Redmi 6 features an IPS LCD display panel which is common on android handsets. Its predecessor also has the same panel. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo coupled with Xiaomi’s own MIUI 9. Thankfully, it is upgradable. MIUI comes with a ton of features and is one of most popular user interfaces in Android world. One thing is worth noting that it has front glass panel which means it will reflect under direct sunlight.

Redmi 6 Hardware and Performance

The biggest change is its processor. Xiaomi has opted a MediaTek processor for this device. For unawares, the company was sued by Ericsson couple of years back and it wasn’t allowed to use MediaTek processors. It seems the company has settled down those glitches, probably that’s we are seeing a MediaTek processor.

Anyway, it has a MediaTek Helio P22 processor which is a low-end SoC and can often be seen on low-end smartphones. It is coupled with 3GB and 4GB of RAM (two variants). The processor is able to handle normal tasks. It will not lag if you are using social media apps or do normal gaming.

But it is definitely not for heavy gamers as it won’t be able to handle graphics-rich games. But that’s okay, it is a low-end smartphone and its performance can be considered decent for this price. We will talk more in our detailed review, wait for it.

Redmi 6 Camera

The Redmi 6 features dual camera setup on the rear with AI capabilities. Over the last few months, smartphone manufacturers have started equipping this technology to offer better camera performance. Redmi 6 has a combo of 12 and 5 megapixels cameras on the rear, out of which, the 12MP is primary sensor for photos and the 5MP is to create bokeh effect.

In this price range, it also has a noticeable feature – Face Unlock. The smartphone uses its front camera to identify the face and unlock the device.

Further, Xiaomi has officially shared some photos, claiming that they have been clicked using Redmi 6 but we are going to do it the own way; the ‘Gadget2Buy way’. We are going to test the camera through every lighting condition and see whether it is good or not. Wait for our in-detail article.

Redmi 6 Battery

The Redmi 6 is backed by a Li-Po 3,000 mAh battery. To compare, the Redmi 5 comes with a bigger 3,300 mAh battery unit. Anyway, the screen size has been made smaller so the backup time is going to remain same as its predecessor.

Our Verdict

Specs wise, the Redmi 6 can prove to be a good choice for those having limited budget. Xiaomi has targeted budget-oriented customers for this phone and it is definitely going to grab attention through its pocket-friendly price and better specifications (compared to Redmi 5).

Further, we are going to talk more in our in-detail article which is going to be published pretty soon. So, keep visiting Gadget2Buy.
