Qualcomm takes on Apple for Patent Infringement

Qualcomm and Apple are two of the top companies providing some of the best products in the mobile phone industry. Any two companies that work in the same industry and slug it out also tend to invariably work together for certain individual advantages and perhaps for the greater good. In fact, let’s just say that in some cases it would be impossible for two companies to work in complete isolation and not provide each other with certain services in specific ways.

As much as the industry survives on competition, it also survives on sharing of services. On that note, we know that Qualcomm is one of the giants of the processors and motherboards for various handheld devices. And many of its services are used by a number of phone manufacturers including Apple.

Qualcomm and Apple have locked horns over the use of patents

It seems that there’s a rift between Apple and Qualcomm as the latter has accused the former of patent infringement. Qualcomm has filed an official complaint against the American phone maker with the International Trade Commission and the Federal Court.

As per Qualcomm, Apple is using six of its many patents without paying for them. These are:

– US Patent 8698558 – extends battery life by offering intelligent antenna power management.

– US Patent 8838949 – helps a phone connect to the network at first boot

– US Patent 8633936 – allows for graphic intensive applications to use less battery power

– US Patent 9535490 – monitors and manages network traffic to and from applications

– US Patent 9608675 – aggregates multiple streams into a single “data super-highway”

– US Patent 8487658 – uses more efficient power interfacing for both high and low voltage circuits

Qualcomm is pushing towards a ban on the sales of iPhones throughout United States. The company has said, “Qualcomm’s inventions are at the heart of every iPhone and extend well beyond modem technologies or cellular standards,” said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel of Qualcomm. “The patents we are asserting represent six important technologies, out of a portfolio of thousands, and each is vital to iPhone functions. Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s technology while refusing to pay for it. These lawsuits seek to stop Apple’s infringement of six of our patented technologies.”
