Two popular names in the mobile phone industry, Nokia and Xiaomi, have come together in a business partnership.
Nokia is a legendary company and any news related to it is bound to create interest. The Finland-based company’s branding rights were acquired by another Finnish company HMD Global in the recent past. Since then, the iconic phone maker is on a revival spree and has launched a bunch of low to mid-range devices while having a keen eye for the high-end segment as well for the near future.
Xiaomi, on the other hand, is another well-known manufacturer coming from China that is renowned to make affordable smartphones with interesting specifications and design.
The business agreement in the limelight will enable both companies to work towards collaborating and providing each other with various networking solutions. There is also a multi-year patent agreement which includes cross license to each other’s cellular patents. In all this, Xiaomi also acquired patent assets from Nokia.
As per the agreement, Nokia will make available network infrastructure equipment that is designed to deliver high capacity and low powered services that are required by large web providers and datacenter operators. Both companies will also jointly work on optical transport solutions for datacenter interconnect and IP routing based on Nokia’s recently announced FP4 network processor and a data center fabric solution.
Other than this, both companies have also agreed to explore opportunities in Internet of Things, Augmented and Virtual reality. In fact, Xiaomi’s Mi Ecosystem loT platform has surpassed 60 million connected devices with an average of over 8 million active users on daily basis.
On this occasion, Rajeev Suri, President and CEO of Nokia said, “Xiaomi is one of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with them. In addition to welcoming such a prominent global technology company to our family of patent licensees, we look forward to working together on a wide range of strategic projects.”
While Lei Jun, Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi commented, “As a company seeking to deliver more exciting technological innovations to the world, we are excited at the opportunity to work more closely with Nokia in future. Xiaomi is committed to building sustainable, long-term partnerships with global technology leaders. Our collaboration with Nokia will enable us to tap on its leadership in building large, high performance networks and formidable strength in software and services, as we seek to create even more remarkable products and services that deliver the best user experience to our Mi fans worldwide.”
