Nokia 8, HMD Global’s flagship for this year, is now official with Carl Zeiss optics powering its dual camera setup. This is the fourth device, and the first flagship, from the Finland-based company after it launched three low to mid-range devices – Nokia 3, 5 and 6 – earlier this year.
Aside the typical (and expected) top grade features, that we will get to in a minute, the highlight of the latest Nokia handset is the Carl Zeiss optics combined with the dual camera setup of which each lens is capable of shooting at 13 mega-pixels. However, there is a difference.
HMD is calling it the dual image-fusion camera where one is a conventional color lens while the other is a monochrome (shoots only in black and white). The front camera, although a typical single-lens unit, is pretty similar to the rear camera in terms of mega-pixels (13 MP) as well as in terms of the aperture of f2.0. Furthermore, the user can choose to use both the front and the rear cameras simultaneously when shooting videos.
Enhancing the overall camera experience even more is the ability of the phone to record 360-degree audio through what is called the OZO technology (heralded as a standard used in Hollywood). This means that the audio can be experienced from the actual directions it is recorded in while shooting a video. This shall improve the overall audio-visual experience of especially the 4k videos.
Nokia 8 is a well-built device having a uni-body design made up of the 6000 series aluminium. Expectedly, it looks pretty good especially with a shiny finish. The device will be running the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1 out of the box and is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor. Qualcomm’s fastest processor so far is paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage (which will be expandable up to 256 GB).
The IPS LCD display panel, protected by the 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5, measures at 5.3 inches and throws a QHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. The battery is not too big at 3,090mAh but given that it will be a largely pure Android, the running time should be satisfactory enough.
The handset will be launched at a price of EUR 599 in Europe first, but there is no information currently of its availability in other markets. Keep watching this space for further updates on this.
