In this article, I’ll be comparing the newly launched Nokia 3 with Redmi 4. Comparison with Redmi 4A will be our next article.
The Nokia 3 has been launched with a price of INR 9,499 whereas the Redmi 4 costs INR 8,999. Both have similar price but have huge difference in terms of specifications. So, let’s find out which one wins the competition and is worth its price. Please note that we have 3GB+32GB variant of Redmi 4.
Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 Physical Appearance Comparison
Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 Display Comparison
Both the Nokia 3 and Redmi 4 have 5 inch HD display with ~294ppi of pixel density, protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass. I felt no difference at all between the duo in terms of display. Both show realistic colors and their display is bright and vibrant. Even under direct sunlight you can use both handsets without any issue. No one is winner here.

Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 User Interface Comparison
The user interface of both the handsets are pretty awesome with Redmi 4 taking a lead. Because MIUI is highly customized Android operating system, it’s almost impossible for other user interfaces to win. Yet, the Nokia 3 competes well because it has Android 7.0. One of the best UI features of Nokia 3 is “Split Screen”. You can use any two applications on your screen simultaneously. I mean, if you are using WhatsApp and Chrome at once; half of the screen will display WhatsApp and rest will display Chrome. You can increase or decrease the window size of any app.
The Redmi 4 on the other hand has MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It’s not the simplest UI out there, but it’s also not that confusing once one gets used to it. Some of its key features include three-finger screenshot – just swipe down three fingers simultaneously on the screen and it will take a screenshot. Not only this, if you want to take a screenshot of any webpage that doesn’t fit in your screen, you can choose the scroll screenshot feature, which will then start scrolling and take the screenshot of the whole page. The MIUI also has an inbuilt app lock feature, infrared remote for controlling televisions, music systems and other electronic appliances. There are countless free themes that can completely change the look and feel of your Redmi Note 4. It also has ‘Dual App’ Profile, allowing you to use two instances of apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp.
The Redmi 4 is clear winner here.
Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 Performance Comparison
Despite of having similar price tag, the Nokia 3 and Redmi 4 have differences in terms of technical specifications. The Nokia 3 is powered by a quad-core processor running at 1.4GHz of clocked processing speed, embedded into a MediaTek MT6737 SoC. Whereas the Redmi Note 4 packs an octa-core processor running at 1.4GHz of clocked processing speed, embedded into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 435 SoC. The Nokia 3 has Mali-T720MP2 GPU and 2GB of RAM, whereas the Redmi 4 packs Adreno 505 GPU and 3GB of RAM.
Before starting the performance comparison, let’s talk about the chipset of both handsets. For the price of INR 8,999, Snapdragon 435 is just okay. There should have been placed Snapdragon 625. Anyway, coming to the Nokia’s MediaTek MT6737, it is an old SoC and it shouldn’t have been placed inside Nokia 3.
If you’re a Nokia fan, this section could be very disappointing for you. As the MediaTek MT6737 is a lower grade CPU, I didn’t expect much from Nokia 3. The device lags a lot, even during normal usage. I was adding a new Google account in the Nokia 3 and it became unresponsive for more than 2 minutes. I literally had my eyes on the clock and it happened several times.
Switching between applications were also not easy. 5 seconds is the minimum time it takes to switch between applications if you are running more than 4 apps simultaneously. What’s more disappointing is it happens with normal apps like WhatsApp and Facebook. Talking about the heavy applications, I installed Modern Combat 5 and Asphalt 8: Airborne. Trust me, I haven’t seen any phone in this price range lagging the way Nokia 3 does. I literally left playing these two games.
The Redmi 4, on the other hand, doesn’t lag while playing normal games however, I felt occasional stutter while switching between apps. But when I tried to switch between apps too quickly, the Redmi Note 4 became unresponsive however, the downtime is less than Nokia 6. It was unresponsive for around 30 seconds. Talking about heavy applications, Asphalt 8: Airborne runs fine but not the Modern Combat.
Coming to the graphics rendering, the Nokia 6 couldn’t handle the graphics of Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat whereas the Redmi 4 was able to handle the graphics of Asphalt 8 but not of Modern Combat 5. One more notable thing is both devices take more time (after using both devices constantly for more than 30 minutes) than usual to launch an application, precisely Nokia 3.
One thing was good that none of the duo heated much (air-conditioned environment). The maximum temperature was 39.9 degrees.
In this section, Redmi 4 is winner however none of these two devices are for gamers. Both drains very fast while playing games.

Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 Camera Comparison
Nokia 3 features an 8 megapixels autofocus rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash whereas the Redmi 4 has a 13 megapixels phase detection autofocus camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash. By looking at camera specs, it was already in my mind that Redmi 4 will outperform the Nokia 3 and indeed, same happened.
Daylight pictures of Nokia 3 and Redmi 4 have huge differences. The Redmi 4 clicks images far better than Nokia 3. Redmi 4 show realistic colors with details and even after zooming it to hundred percent, I didn’t feel noise. Objects in the images are clear and don’t fade. The Nokia 3, on the other hand, fails to produce realistic colors. After zooming the images, you will feel so much noise. Objects in the images are blurry and faded.
Low light pictures taken from Nokia 3 are good but not better than the Redmi 4. Again, the Nokia 3 misses to show color accuracy and details whereas the Redmi 4 shows accurate colors and good details. Same is the case with HDR performance. I took several shots from both the devices. You can see the samples below.
Talking about video, Nokia 3 is good at stabilization but again not good at showing colors and details whereas the Redmi 4 isn’t good at stabilization but very good at showing colors and details.
The Redmi 4 wins here.
Both the Nokia 3 and Redmi have same 8MP selfie camera but with different aperture, f/2.0 and f/2.2 respectively. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any distinguishable difference between images produced by them.
Talking about the video, I shot the fidget spinner to find out if the duo is able to capture the movement. Unfortunately, both smartphones’ performance is identical. They shoot the video at 30 frame per second which isn’t good for shooting the fast moving object. But yes, both devices’ front camera work well when it comes to shooting normal videos.
No one is winner here.
Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 Battery Comparison
Battery is one of the most important things people look for in a smartphone. The Nokia 3 and Redmi 4 are backed by a 2,650 Li-lion and 4,100 mAh Li-Polymer battery. None of them has fast charging feature which is disappointing.
30 Minutes: 15% (Nokia 3) | 16% (Redmi 4)
90 Minutes: 50% (Nokia 3) | 55% (Redmi 4)
180 Minutes: 96% (Nokia 3) | 98% (Redmi 4)
What I found surprising that despite of having a bigger battery, the Redmi 4 spends same time as Nokia 3 to fully charge the battery. The Nokia 3 takes 3 hours and 10 minutes to fully charge the battery, whereas the Redmi 4 takes 3 hours and 7 minutes.
Talking about the usage, none of these two smartphones for gamers. Both last just 3 hours if you’re playing games and if you switch to heavy games, the time reduces to 2 hours. During normal usage, Redmi Note 4 outperforms Nokia 6 as it last for 36 hours whereas Nokia 3 lasts almost 24 hours.
The Redmi 4 wins in this section.
[nextpage title=”Sound Quality & Conclusion” ]
Nokia 3 vs Redmi 4 Sound Quality
Both the Nokia 3 and Redmi 4 have average onboard acoustics however, somehow I felt that Redmi 4’s sound quality is better than the Nokia 3. It offers loud and crisp sound whereas Nokia 3 produces echo and flat sound.
The Redmi 4 doesn’t come with bundled earphone whereas Nokia 3 does; however, its earphone is average. So, for a better music experience, you should go for better-quality earphones.
In this section, the crown easily goes to the Redmi 4.
Special Mention: One more disappointing thing about Nokia 3 is despite of being priced at INR 9,499, it doesn’t have fingerprint sensor whereas most of the devices in this range come with fingerprint sensor. Redmi 4 also has fingerprint sensor which is very quick and accurate.
Despite of falling in similar price range, both have different level of specifications. Redmi 4 justifies its price whereas the Nokia 3 is overpriced. So yes, if your budget is around INR 10,000; you should go for Redmi 4.
