Apple iPhone: Ten Years since We Saw the Biggest Revolution in the Mobile Phone Industry

1 1,988

It has been exactly 10 years since the greatest revolution was witnessed in the mobile phone industry – the birth of the iPhone. The moment Steve Jobs, then CEO of Apple, held the first ever iPhone in his hands, everything changed that was to follow. A mobile phone operated only by a touch screen and no physical keypad? It was unbelievable yet real at the same time. You could very much touch it.

Things haven’t been the same since then. The term Smartphone has more or less come to replace the words “mobile phone” with non-stop innovations by one manufacturer and the other. And while the opinions on an iPhone can often be polarizing, there is no denying that Apple has to be credited as the original trendsetter. Its unique and unmatched eco system is wonderfully supported by the unmatchable optimization between the hardware and software of its various devices.

Apple has launched 15 iPhones so far, but let’s take a look at the ones who likely made the biggest impact:

The first mobile phone with a touchscreen as the only source of operation. There was no physical keyboard or a keypad. The touchscreen was designed to be used by fingers. It was intuitive and natural. Measuring at 3.5 inches, the screen provided a good view of everything that it presented even when the pixel density was acceptable at the most and the “retina display” was at least another 2 generations away. It introduced us to the world of downloadable applications that were there to increase the usability of the phone and enhance the user experience. It wasn’t without its flaws – no MMS feature and a message couldn’t be sent to multiple contacts, to name a few. But it gave an all-new user experience unlike anything before it.

iPhone 3GS

The upgraded version of the iPhone 3G, it was faster and had better hardware than its previous iterations. The competition was beginning to catch up during this time but the overall experience of using the phone had improved making it a great buy. It had an improved camera and audio performance over its predecessors.

iPhone 4

The first iPhone to introduce the “retina display” (which basically means that the pixel density is high enough that it couldn’t be noticed by a naked eye), it had a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels with 330ppi on the same 3.5-inch screen. It had an all-new design with a metal frame and came with a 5MP main camera. It was also the first iPhone to have a front facing camera which debuted the FaceTime video calling.

iPhone 5S

By this time, we understood that the “S” moniker means an improved version of an existing model rather than an all-new model. The iPhone 5S, still, was a drastic change and a trendsetter in the industry and for the others to follow. It was the first iPhone with a 64bit processor handling the slightly bigger 4-inch display and a separate co-motion processor to handle certain additional tasks like the heartbeat sensor. It was also the first phone with the astonishingly efficient fingerprint sensor. Basically, Apple’s first iPhone since the original one that had major innovation. The design was an evolution, in a way, of the iPhone 4/4S with the aluminium frame and body.

iPhone 7/7 Plus

The latest pair of Apple devices shares its design ideology with the iPhone 6, however, they are the most modern and fastest iPhones the American company has ever made. Each new incarnation of its smartphone is said to be noticeably faster than the other and has a nice gradual upgrade curve if one notices the pattern.

Between the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the latter is the first device from the company to come with a dual camera setup at the back which enables it to take portrait images even when it is achieved through some software trickery. It is also the first iPhone camera to have a true 2x optical zoom and the first to get the IP67 certification making it water and dust proof.

What can we expect from the next iPhone?

Any new iPhone is awaited with the highest possible excitement and curiosity even if there is a fair idea of what to expect from the upcoming device. In today’s times, it is hard for any company to maintain secrets about their future products. There are leaks of which some are accidental and some can be considered as strategic marketing campaigns.

The new iPhone, supposedly the iPhone 8, is likely to have a screen dominant display with the thinnest bezels ever seen on an Apple device, an OLED display panel and it could be the first ever smartphone in the world to have the fingerprint sensor integrated into the display itself (still unconfirmed). These are two major features we are most looking forward to while there can be more.

Rest assured, trust Apple to make the 10th anniversary of the iPhone a memorable event.
