After getting separated from Oppo, RealMe launched its new smartphone last month – the RealMe 2. And as promised, the company kept its price under ₹10,000 and launched it with the starting price of ₹8,990. At the time of the launch, the company said that they have done huge improvements. The newcomer now comes with a fingerprint sensor and the notch.

The company also emphasized a lot over the design of RealMe 2. The newcomer carries a better look when compared to its predecessor. It also comes with a bigger display. Anyway, these are the things that the company says. Our job is to determine whether it really is good or not. So, we are going to put the handset against Honor 9N and Redmi 6 Pro.

At the time of launch, RealMe really bragged a lot about the design of RealMe 2. And it’s true too, the handset does look amazing. It has an all-glass back panel with the diamond crystal-like design. Each crystal shines from a different angle. We have the Red color variant which looks vibrant. Holding it in the hands do give a premium feel and unawares can’t tell that this is an under the ₹10k phone.

In this section, we also have two other recently launched phones – Honor 9N and Redmi 6 Pro. The RealMe 2 is cheaper than the two but it carries a better design. The phone looks so beautiful that you can even gift it to your girlfriend. But yes, if we talk about the display, the RealMe 2 does lag behind. It just has HD+ display whereas the rest two come with a full HD+ one. However, it is bigger than the two. It has 6.2 inches unit whereas the rest two come with 5.84 inches one.

All three phones come with the notch which I personally don’t like because it is basically useless and shows just the notification icons. But in RealMe 2, the notch lets you reply to your social messages. In other phones, you need to swipe down the notification tray and then do the operation; and this is irritating when playing games. In RealMe 2, a very sleek window pops up and lets your reply. You don’t need to swipe down the notification tray that covers the entire screen.

The RealMe 2 comes with Snapdragon 450 which we have already seen in its predecessor. So in terms of performance, nothing is changed. It performs as same as its predecessor. Normal tasks and multi-tasking are good. If you’re playing normal games (not heavier than 500 megabytes), it won’t lag. I was playing Shadow Fight 3 which is roughly 500MB in size and it was working fine. Even the graphics management was good.

But as soon as I switched to heavy games like PUBG Mobile and Modern Combat, it started lagging despite setting the graphics to the minimum. So if you love to play games, you should go for some other phone. In this segment, the Honor 9N and Redmi 6 Pro perform better as they come with Kirin 659 and Snapdragon 625 processors respectively.

At the time of launch, they literally bragged about the camera. Well, the reality is something else. During my test run, I found it to be below average. Daylight photos are just okay. Photo quality isn’t good; it tries to oversaturate the colors. I took several samples and found that the handset doesn’t capture enough details. Even the manual focusing doesn’t work properly if you are trying to take some macro or bokeh shots. It tends to overexpose the light part.

And the situation becomes worse when you try to shoot in low-lighting condition. I tried HDR mode but it doesn’t help. It reminds me of Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 whose HDR mode is also not effective. There is so much grain and the colors look like water paint.

Putting it against the Honor 9N and Redmi 6 Pro, the latter two are definitely better with Redmi 6 Pro leading the way.

And now comes the most important part where the RealMe 2 is actually good. It packs a 4,230 mAh battery, it’s big. It easily lasts around 1 and a half day in a single charge. During moderate usage, it lasts up to 18 hours. So yes, the battery performance is reliable.

I also did constant gaming on this smartphone. During 30 minutes of gameplay, it took 15% of the battery. So if I calculate using this data, it would last around 6 and a half hour which is pretty much impressive as I have seen phones lasting just around 3 hours. But yes, it doesn’t come with fast charger and takes around 2 and a half hour to fully charge the battery.

For comparison, the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s battery performance is also similar to the RealMe 2. The Honor 9N, on the other hand, lags behind as it has a smaller 3,000 mAh battery.

Our Verdict

The RealMe 2 is targeted to budget-oriented customers. It is priced at ₹8,990 and carries a beautiful design. It offers very good battery life and performs decently. These were the pros of this handset. Now coming to the cons, its camera performance is below average and you can’t play heavy games on this handset. So, if you are photography lover or gamer, you should go for the better ones. Now, which one should you choose from these three? My answer is Redmi 6 Pro.
