Asus Zenfone 5z Design and Build Quality

With an aerospace grade 7.7mm slim aluminum body, the Asus Zenfone 5z has 2.5D curved glass both on the rear and at the front. It feels solid in hands and won’t bend in the pocket. With 90% screen-to-body ratio, the smartphone is nearly all-screen at the front. Much like the Lenovo Z5, it has some bezels below the display. Overall, the smartphone looks amazing and gives premium feel.

Asus Zenfone 5z Display

The smartphone is built around a 6.2 inch display which has a brightness of 550 nits which means it is brighter than any other smartphone in this range. You can use the handset under direct sunlight without needing to cover the screen in order to see what’s being displayed.

Another interesting thing is that the display has DCI-P3 color gamut which is a movie-grade color accuracy standard. Meaning, the colors will look better and realistic than any other smartphone in this range.

The Asus Zenfone 5z comes with a notch but it isn’t like an ordinary notch. In other phones like OnePlus 6, the video can be played in 18:9 aspect ratio without utilizing the notch. But in Zenfone 5z, the video actually gets stretched to 19:9 aspect ratio which means the notch can also be utilized. Plus, you can hide the notch too.

Asus Zenfone 5z Gaming and Performance

I did play PUBG Mobile for more than 15 minutes on this smartphone, thanks to Asus’s arrangement for game testers. I found no lag or stutter. While playing the game, I was projecting the screen to an external 32 inch display over Wi-Fi.

While playing the game, the handset didn’t heat. I also tried doing multi-tasking and it handled them with an ease. I am pretty much satisfied with the initial performance but do wait for our in-depth review where we will dig deeper.

The handset comes with 12+8MP rear cameras with a bunch of AI features. I took some shots there and they were pretty good. Color accuracy and details were more than satisfactory. Even Asus had arranged a cabin for lowlight photography where I took some shots and I am amazed with the performance. Now I know why they were emphasizing on lowlight photography.

Front-facing camera also appears to be good, thanks to its AI. Asus is providing a separate application for selfie lovers where you will get several filters and settings to create a better selfie. We will do the in-depth testing in our detailed article, wait for it.

Asus Zenfone 5z Software and User Interface

The smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with ZenUI. The company has tried to simplify the user interface to the extent. Apart from customized app icons, you will feel like its stock Android. Anyway, the UI is quick and doesn’t lag at all. Plus, I didn’t see unusual preloaded apps there.
